Matilde Cuena
Matilde Cuena Casas is a Professor of Civil Law at the Complutense University of Madrid, a practicing lawyer, and co-founder of the Hay Derecho Foundation. She co-directs advanced specialization courses on individual insolvency and family law. She is the author of several monographs and numerous scholarly articles, and has led multiple research projects funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and the Ministry of Science and Innovation. Her work focuses on topics such as over-indebtedness, individual bankruptcy, responsible lending, and the legal protection of primary residences. She has completed research stays at Harvard Law School and the University of Perugia, and has played an active role in legislative reforms. She has advised the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Economy, and the IMF on matters related to natural person insolvency, credit files, and mortgage credit legislation. Her contributions have influenced key legal texts, including the Spanish Insolvency Law and the transposition of EU Directive 2019/1023. She co-edited the Treatise on Family Law (8 volumes), and has been recognized for her work in promoting responsible credit, receiving an award from the Professional Association of Investment Advisors and Judicial Experts (AIF) in 2020.
