Cándido Paz-Ares
Candido Paz-Ares is a Professor of Commercial Law at the Autonomous University of Madrid and a partner at Uría Menéndez. He served as Director General of Registries and Notaries (1988–1990) and as Dean of the Faculty of Law at the Autonomous University of Madrid (1997–2000). He is a permanent member of the General Codification Commission (Commercial Law Section) and has taken part in numerous legislative projects. He is regarded by his peers as one of Spain’s leading authorities in corporate law and corporate governance. He was a member of the “Olivencia Committee,” which was commissioned by the Spanish Government to draft the Code of Good Governance (1998), and later of the Aldama Commission, created to promote security and transparency in the markets and listed companies (2003). He was also part of the Conthe Commission, established by the Government to review and update the Code of Good Governance (2005–2006), as well as the Expert Commission appointed by the Government to improve corporate governance in Spain (2014–2015). He has extensive experience in corporate law, mergers and acquisitions, and capital markets. He is also the author of several reference works on commercial law in Spain. The leading international legal directories (Chambers & Partners, IFLR 1000, Euromoney, Legal Media Group’s Guide to the World’s Leading Lawyers, Best Lawyers in Spain, International Who’s Who of Business Lawyers) recognize him as one of Spain’s most prominent lawyers in the fields of mergers and acquisitions, capital markets, and corporate law.
